The nature of Leadership and management

The leadership involves management and management involves leadership. Consequently, it may be difficult to discover differences between leadership & Management. There is some consent on the important nature of both and the skills involved, as set out below, but there is more difference in which is the most important.

Leadership
As defined by Dixon (1994: 214):’ Leadership is no more than exercising such an influence upon others that they tend to act in concert towards achieving a goal which they might not have achieved so readily had they been left to their own devices.’

Management
Research by Tamkin et al (2003) established that the abilities managers needs are to empower and develop people, manage people and performance, work across boundaries, engaging with others, working as a member of a team, thinking differently about problems and their solutions, develop a relationship and focus on the customer and balance technical and generic skills.

Conclusion
As per the Birkinshaw (2010: 23), to put simply, we all need to be both leaders and managers.  Burgoyne (2010: 42) observed that: ‘Management and leadership are needed and need to work closely together, often through the same person or team’. Therefore ‘Let’s stop the dysfunctional separation of leadership from management. We all know that managers who don’t lead are boring, dispiriting. Well, leaders who don’t manage are distant, disconnected’ by Earlier, Mintzberg (2004:22).
